Virtual/Remote Project Spotlight: Sleeping Mats for the Homeless

As of January 2019, Indiana had an estimated 5,471 experiencing homelessness on any given day, as reported
by Continuums of Care to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Of that Total, 544 were family households, 572 were Veterans, 258 were unaccompanied young adults (aged 18-24), and 366 were individuals experiencing chronic homelessness. Plastic bags are one of the worst offenders of the wasteful products that are polluting the Earth's oceans and occupying the limited space of landfills. This project involves taking these facts into consideration and making sleeping mats for the homeless using plastic grocery bags. The mats will aid those without access to shelter in the ability to sleep comfortably wherever they need to. As sleeping mats, they are more hygienic, waterproof, easily transportable, and provide protection from the cold concrete. Ready to start making mats?
